What to Wear for a Maternity Photoshoot

Your maternity session is such a special moment, one that celebrates the incredible journey of growing new life. I know that choosing what to wear can sometimes feel overwhelming, but don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! I want you to feel absolutely radiant and confident during your session, and I’m here to help every step of the way.

What to Wear for a Maternity Photoshoot in Townsville: Styling Tips for Timeless Photos

Flowing, fitted, or stretchy dresses-What works best?

The right outfit will not only highlight your beautiful bump but also make you feel comfortable and elegant. I always recommend:

  • Flowy dresses for a dreamy, romantic feel, perfect for movement and soft, glowing images.

  • Fitted, stretchy gowns to beautifully define your curves and celebrate your bump.

  • Wrap or empire-waist dresses that flatter every body type while giving a timeless look.

If you choose to wear a dress from my client closet, a nude or off-white bra and underwear will complement it beautifully. A matching set is always best. Avoid mixing two different colours. A delicate lace or silky nude set will enhance the overall look perfectly!

Stick to soft, neutral, and earthy tones

Soft ivories, warm browns, sage greens, and muted pinks always photograph beautifully. They complement natural light and keep the focus on you and your bump rather than on the outfit itself. Bright whites can sometimes be a little harsh, so I usually suggest creamy tones instead.

Keep it simple-avoid bold patterns and logos

Busy prints, stripes, or logos can take attention away from the natural beauty of pregnancy. Instead, opt for solid colours or subtle textures that add depth without being distracting.

Layers and accessories-little touches make a difference

A flowing cardigan, a soft knit shawl, or even a delicate floral crown can add a personal touch without being too much. Minimalist jewelry or even a stylish hat can also bring extra character to your photos! You can also bring a fresh bouquet of flowers. They add a beautiful touch to your maternity photos.

Consider the setting and season

Your outfit should complement the location of your session:

  • Beach or outdoor sessions? Think flowy dresses in soft pastels or neutrals.

  • Studio session? A fitted gown, soft knits, or an elegant off the shoulder piece will look stunning.

  • Cooler months? Layered looks, cosy knitted sweaters, and cardigans & warm textures photograph beautifully.

Coordinate with your partner and family

If your partner or little ones are joining the session, consider outfits in soft, neutral tones that complement yours rather than match exactly. Keeping a cohesive colour palette helps create timeless images without feeling too coordinated. A tip for dads: Remove bulky watches and empty your pockets, especially your phone. These small details can be distracting in intimate shots, drawing attention away from the genuine connection and emotion in the moment.

Comfort is key!

I want you to feel completely at ease during your session. Choose outfits that allow movement and make you feel beautiful. Anything too tight, restrictive, or uncomfortable can take away from the experience.

Bare belly or covered? It’s completely your choice!

Some mamas love showcasing their bump in a two piece outfit or an open front dress. Some choose to embrace the beauty of pregnancy with elegant, artistic nude portraits, while others prefer to keep it covered. There’s no right or wrong. Just whatever makes you feel your best!
